Product is a pair of custom designed Butterfly Swords, made by hand.   All measurements and weights approximate.

This is a Sifu-Grade quality (Grade 2) prototype pair of Wing Chun Butterfly Swords, part of a chain of prototypes in a joint project with a famous U.S. knife maker. This project is the first time anyone has ever made, and tested, sub-hilt Wing Chun knives that we know of!

Sifu Grade means a martial instructor would be thrilled to own it, but a knife collector would find it deficient. There are some extremely minor finishing flaws, we thought the D Guard could flow better, and the tip changed going into the final collector quality version which will probably sell for somewhere from $1,600 to $2,200 with a certificate of design authenticity by the U.S. knife maker and U.S. made leather sheaths We have permission to sell off the initial prototypes without using his name, and with no certificate of authenticity.

These Wing Chun knives were made by hand by Forge Master K. Ali, whose work has been featured in Blade Magazine and various martial arts magazines. He is the Forge Master of a third-generation family blacksmith shop that has the skills to make everything from hammered blades to CNC machined precision work. He has been called the finest knife maker in his country, and his collector market work sells internationally for prices ranging from $275 to $1,595. He is the foremost international maker of Wing Chun Butterfly Swords with completed projects including the famous integral swords, Sasquatch style BJD (w/permission of Doug Kenefick), law enforcement and military knives. Forge Master K. Ali prefers to work with Bohler steels, primarily 440C and D2, and is one of the few knife makers in the world who can polish D2 Tool Steel to a true mirror finish. He is one of the few custom knife makers in the world who regularly work with AISI 304 stainless steel for D Guards and bolsters.

Each sword has an American full tang with mirror finish Bohler D2 high carbon, high chromium tool steel blade with an aesthetic recurve flange and choil. Many knife experts consider D2 the best carbon steel for knife making due to its toughness, ability to take and retain a fine edge, and high corrosion resistance.

The scales are of green/black linen micarta(TM), which is a brand name, or micarta-type material. Eight small pins and the sub-hilt insert help retain it solidly in place. The "D" Guard is made of cast and ground AISI 304 stainless steel, a difficult material to work but the best for both knife bolsters and Butterfly Sword "D" Guards.

The rope filework on the spine beneath and adjacent to the quillon is intended to help retain an opponent's weapon during trapping. The knives have a Yagyu Fat Nose tip (known by many as a tri-point). The tip is pointy and the cutting edge sharp. The nearly full length swage is not sharp, not even close enough for, in our opinion, anyone to get away with claiming it is sharp.
These swords are real weapons and very dangerous.

The blade was professionally heat treated by a third-party specialist to HRC 58. The quality of the heat treatment is generally MORE IMPORTANT than the specific steel.

The pair of knives come with the plain leather sheaths shown. Do not store the knife in the sheath, or the sheath adjacent to the knife long-term, as leather extrudes corrosive oil and gives off corrosive fumes. Sheaths are for transport only, not storage. Please educate yourself on knife cleaning and maintenance to preserve your investment.

Things to Consider Before Ordering:

1) Check with your local laws to determine the legality of all items ordered. Seller is not responsible for any items seized by customs or other authorities and will not knowingly make shipments to countries where any items are illegal. By placing an order, you are representing that you are an adult, the product(s) ordered are lawful in your local jurisdiction and that you will use the products in compliance with all applicable laws. You accept full responsibility and costs for all customs fees and VAT. Seller will not replace or refund any item confiscated by local authorities or customs agents.

2) These are handmade. There will be slight imperfections on most handmade work commensurate with its pricing. Mr. Ali's highest quality/grade/difficulty knives generally sell for $300 to $500 through other venues with Collector Grade Butterfly Sword pairs selling for up to $1,595. All measurements are approximate. Blade lengths were measured from the border with the bolster/hilt to the tip including any ricasso/choil where it is within that defined area.

3) Plain Language Disclaimer: Knives are inherently dangerous. Glass breakers are also very dangerous to the user and should be used only in cases of life or death and with protective gear. Swords with sharp edges are for display only and should not be used for martial arts training. Even blunt swords are dangerous. You agree that you won't sue the Seller, designer or maker for anything related to using this product for any reason whatsoever and you (and we) really mean it!

See the Limited Warranty/Legal section of this web-site prior to purchase!  While these knives come with our standard warranty, we do not have a lot of them so if there is a warranty issue (hopefully not) you should expect a refund or accommodation rather than replacement.
